First day of the School discovery program was pretty exciting as i get to "re-unite" with all the design students again, after being involved in the transnational studies.
So, on the first day, we were briefed through about what we were going to go through for the next two weeks or so and the things and activities we were expected to know.
After that , we had a short quiz on how well we knew the design school. Some of the questions were pretty manageable but some were like totally alien to us. We were supposed to find the answers ourselves and we proceeded to the level above us and bombed any seniors we saw for the answers and within twenty minutes, we were able to solve all the questions.
Lunch was after that and we were told that we were going to go to marina basin to have a go at sketching the scenery/ buildings there and a class of seniors were going with us as well. That day was supposed to be focusing on our drawing/painting essentials. we settled on the bus, not knowing what to expect.
when we reached, we were briefed by the lecturer, Tia, and she assured that the sketch/painting we were going to do would not be assessed , but some of us, including me were still a tad bit stressed out about whether our works would be up to standards.
It was drizzling slightly that day and the wind was blowing against our faces but the weather was good overall. The nine of us settled along the bay and armed with all the tools and stationery we needed, we started to draw what we saw infront of us. As Tia told us that we could incoporate our own personality inside, i decided to make the buildings more colourful and added the things i liked inside, like ribbons, soft toys etc. Honestly ,i do not enjoy sketching inanimate objects like buildings as i find them to be a little boring to draw.
Although it turned out weirder and much uglier than i expected ,i enjoyed the process nonetheless. Strangers all around us were gathering and peeking at our paintings and tourists seemed to have taken an interest as well and started taking pictures of us.
Looking at the sketches Tia had painted was breathtaking and everyone was speechless. The works that she was able to produce in a matter of minutes was commendable and admirable. After a small "exhibition" of our own works ,brief account of our works by Tia and how to improve on them and taking countless of pictures, we were then dismissed and that marked the end of my day one of the school discovery program.
