today, we mainly focused on retail and hospitality design.
lecturer, ms Huey min first picked us up and we proceeded to the classroom for an hour of lecture.
we first introduced ourselves to her and she asked us to list out the reasons why we chose our course. After that it was her turn to introduce herself to us and explained to us about retail and hospitality design, what it is all about and the main course structure.
After the lecture,we took a bus scheduled to bring us to NEX mall. We were briefed on what to do(take pictures of shops that appealed to us/ shops that you think has a good layout etc) and explain why we chose that particular shop to the class after reaching school later on.
We went as a whole group, scanning through all the levels, taking photos of various shops. There was when i really scrutinized all the details and layout of the shop and what i thought about them.
After gathering all the photos we needed, we headed for lunch at a restaurant , i think it was called " Grandma's restaurant" . we had a great time chatting and basking in the ambiance of the place. Also, we had ice cream after that, so being full to the brim, we were ready to head back to school for our mini presentation.
The bus took like forever to arrive and we were all restless for that half an hour. The mini presentation was held after we reached school and the shop that i was going to present was Converse. Not only because i like the brand itself, its because of the whole layout and decor of the shop. The theme of Converse has always been very grungy and street - style as the target audience is mainly for male youths.
So, i really like the idea of the black and red walls of the shop which totally fits the theme and besides that , they hung large photographs around the store where the converse merchandise is being worn on the streets.
After listening to all the others' presentations and what Ms huey min had to say about everyone's works, i had a better idea of how the layout , the decor, the use of space etc in a retail space can affect the whole look and business of the store. For example,we all agreed that the nex mall is very disorganized and messy as different shops are placed all over the place and there are many empty spaces in the middle of nowhere.
All in all, i learnt alot about retail and hospitality design and that concludes my 3rd day of the school discovery program.
